Résumé:
This dissertation work deals with the movement for Diretas-Já in Paraíba, between the years 1983 and 1984. The objective that guides the research and the final writing of this
text is to analyze the context, formation and development of the Diretas in the state of
Paraíba, in the transition process. It seeks to investigate how different subjects and
social groups in Paraíba acted in this process, based on their respective interests and
ideologies. In this sense, this work is based on the theoretical-methodological assumptions of historical materialism, both in the writings of its founders and in those of authors who carried forward this vision of history based on fundamental concepts such as totality, class struggle and ideology. The investigation is based on the analysis of a documental corpus composed essentially of periodicals of the time, mainly copies belonging to Jornal da Paraíba, Diário da Borborema and Gazeta do Sertão. With this
study, it is expected to contribute to the knowledge of a topic that has been little
explored by the historiography of Paraíba until today, as well as to contribute to the critical historiography on the transition process to the so-called “New Republic”.
