Resumo:
Among sickles, hoes, machine guns and rifles, this work aims to discuss how the
conflict known as the “Tragedy of Mari” occurred in January 1964 in the state of
Paraíba. The conflict is marked by the death of 11 people, seven by landowners and
police, while four were killed by peasants; the combat is marked by an army weapon
that was in the possession of landowners. This shock is defining to understand the
course of the 1964 Military Coup in Paraíba, considering that after the confrontation,
the orientation by the Pedro Gondim government (which tried to maintain a role of
conciliator) was one of repression since more than 100 Police officers began to guard
the Várzea Region where the city of Mari was located.
