Resumen:
With a corresponding water accumulation area to 253 million cubic meters, Acauã Dam is the
3rd largest water reservoir in the state of Paraiba. This source began in the period comprising
14 June 1999 to August 2002, which flooded parts of the municipalities of Aroeiras, Itatuba
and Natuba. In addition to historicizing construction of the dam in focus, this paper discusses
the social and environmental impacts caused by the same. Therefore, it prioritized the main
objective, to analyze changes from an environmental point of view and spatial partner that
were generated by the construction of Acauã Dam in Vila Nova de community of Pedro
Velho situated on the Paraíba River banks in the city of Aroeiras - PB, about 148 km from the
capital João Pessoa and, as specific objectives, assess the effects of Acauã construction on the
physical and biotic environment, identify how the families live on the repossession process to
which they were submitted and meet the dispossession process of river that They lived in that
area. The study allowed us to observe that the greatest attempts Acauã of dam construction
are providing water to the cities of Salgado de Sao Felix, Itabaiana, Pilar, Inga, Itatuba, Mogeiro,
San Miguel de Itaipu, Aroeiras and Fagundes, reinforcement the water system that supplies
Campina Grande, Boqueirao, Burning and Caturité; Irrigation of the Lower Vale do Paraíba;
creating a fishing pole and containment of the floods that periodically ravage the cities
of Salgado de Sao Felix, Itabaiana, San Miguel de Itaipu, Holy Spirit Cross and Cabedelo.
Hence, one can have an idea of the magnitude of Acauã reservoir and, concomitantly, to note
that a work like this carries great consequences for the coastal communities, and to nonriparian,
but living in their surroundings, either in the economy when disarranges its production
bases, either in its infrastructure, given the flood of public goods. In this sense, it has the
intention to build documents that can be used by local governments as a way of guiding instralument
of public policy improvements to the living conditions of those affected by the
construction of Acauã Dam.
