Resumo:
The El Niño and La Niña phenomena have great influence over the climate on the tropics,
causing changes on rainfall and temperature patterns. On Brazilian Northeast the El Niño
acts facilitating the prolongation of the dry season, while La Niña favors the rainfall índices.
Campina Grande, second largest city of Paraíba state with approximately 400 thousand
habitants, tends to feel the impacts that extreme rains or droughts bring, since the entire
population is affected. Based on these premises, this monography aims to analyze the socioenvironmental
impacts that ENOS generated in Campina Grande – PB between 1975 and
2015 by the evaluation of rainfall data, comparison of these with the existing data on the
period and intensity of the Niños and the verification of the impacts by the journalistic
records of the time. The results showed that the poorest population in the city is one of the
most affected by extreme events, although the entire population receives some kind of
impact, as well as the understanding that the Niños are not the only or strongest implicators
of the local climate.
