Abstract:
The present article aimed to analyze the influence that the ceramic industries have on the development
of the desertification process in the city of Picuí - PB. This area can be characterized by a serious state
of environmental degradation, the analysis is also based on other factors such as the production of
charcoal and mining, and that also exert influence on the desertification process. This is currently
considered one of the most serious environmental problems, feeded by an economic perspective
typical of the capitalist system. Natural resources have been used in an intense and unsustainable way,
the vegetal extractivism in the anthropic action in the municipality of Picuí - PB contributed decisively
to a significant reduction of the local vegetation. In order to reach the research objectives, it was
decided to use the geoprocessing techniques, specifically the NDVI (Normalized Difference
Vegetation Index), as a methodological tool, in a 25-year time period analysis (1991 to 2016). As a
result, vegetation reduction can be observed. The rate of deforestation in the mentioned time scale
reached 84.5%; and the two main extractive activities in the city of Picuí - PB, such as the production
of charcoal and ceramics, were determinant for the configuration of the anthropic degradation in the
city of Picuí-PB, which culminated with the intensification of the process of desertification.
