Abstract:
This work has as main purpose to analyze a spatial dynamics of the Malvinas Region and
neighboring neighborhoods, investigating its transformations, which characterize the place as a
new centrality for the city of Campina Grande (PB). From the processes of organization and
reorganization of the urban mesh, it was possible to understand how the emergence of new
centralities has been occurring in medium-sized cities, as is the case of Campina Grande, and
how this influences the current intra-urban structure of the city, which currently undergoes a
constant expansion of its urban space in view of the increase in population. In addition, it was
necessary to recover the formation of Bairro das Malvinas and how this led to the emergence
of most neighborhoods in the Region, also influenced by its commercial character. Currently,
the Region stands out for the different types of establishments that characterize the place as a
new centrality. To define the type of centrality that occurs in the Region, a research
methodology was developed based on Duarte (1974) and Souza (2009), on sub-centers and
commercial axes. It was necessary to identify the functions performed by this centrality, as well
as the categorization of the types of commerce in view of the frequency of consumption in the
four main roads in the Region, where the largest number of commerce and service
establishments are concentrated. It is clear that the expansion of Campina Grande to the
southwestern part of the city is also motivated by the strengthening of this Region, which
benefited from the arrival of large public service establishments, implanted by the State. Given
the diversity of establishments found and the functions performed, according to the
methodology used, the Region of Malvinas and neighboring neighborhoods plays a role of sub-
center for local residents and other areas, being also of interest to property developers, which
consequently favors the emergence of new housing estates and subdivisions. In addition, this
work raises new discussions about how the new centralities in medium-sized cities and the
individualities found in the Malvinas Region are formed.
