Abstract:
The urbanization process is happening faster and faster in Brazilian cities, creating small and medium-sized cities in the interior of the states. Thinking about it, the study on urban growth has been standing out. In the present work, we will identify the urban growth process in the municipality of Toritama / PE, the factors that propitiated the growth and spatially characterize this urban advance. This study took place from some readings important writers for Urban Geography, such as, Sposito (2010), Corrêa (1995), Souza (2011), Araújo (2000) Castells (1983). I also highlight some readings on the textile production in the Pernambuco countryside written by, Lira (2011) and Xavier (2018). Procedures that we used to analyze the urban growth of the city happened through images available on Google Earth, observing, thus, the growth of the urban spot from the year 1969 to 2018. After studying the images, highlight three important points for the discussion of urban advance: The highways that give access to the city; The bank of the Capibaribe River; The allotment. There was an increase in the urban area, mainly on the two highways that connect Toritama to surrounding cities. We realized that this growth occurs through subdivisions that were planned far from the city center, causing some problems.
