Resumo:
The stock breeding activity since the beginning of the process of organizing the agrarian
space of São João do Cariri, was the element that marked out the existing relations of
production in agricultural establishments. Inside this space there was, throughout history,
some significant changes in the forms of management practiced, as perceived after the crisis
of the sugarcane industry and the rise and crisis of the cotton industry, the latter being
succeeded by a modernization policy which the palm forage the giant variety assumed a
prominent role, becoming the main source of forage available to livestock effective and hence
printing compelling brands in humanized landscape. This dynamic remained until the year
2011 when the plague of cochineal carmine began attacking existing palmais in the
agricultural area of the city, leading to their complete eradication. Based on this phenomenon,
this research takes to analyze the reorganization of agrarian space of São João do Cariri after
the decimation of the cactus pest cochineal carmine's. Therefore, the qualitative research
methodology was adopted that sought, through the use of instruments such as literature,
observation, interview, questionnaire and survey of iconographic records form the basis for
obtaining relevant information for this analysis . The survey found that eradication of palmais
by the action of cochineal carmine difficult existing forms of management within the
property, leading producers to reduce the breeding herd. On the other hand, the reorganization
of agrarian space after the action of this phenomenon stands the reintroduction of giant cactus,
which is still being attacked by the plague of cochineal, the resumption of the use of native
cacti, industrialized feed and grass production to feed herds, although the sources most
commonly used today, requires that the producer makes use of more capital and workforce in
its management, but without ensuring the basic needs of the flock and hence maintaining their
income. On the other hand, the findings and incorporating resistant cactus varieties are present
in this reorganization, but most of the producers are finding it difficult to make these varieties
thrive, given the weakness displayed by them front to the local climate, which, according to
producers, these varieties require you to make the use of irrigation. It is essential to
incorporate, among the actions undertaken by public actors, other ways to combat the plague
of cochineal carmine, without necessarily take as a basis the findings and cultivation of new
varieties resistant to pest, since these, at least so far, they have not fulfilled the role expected
of it.
