Abstract:
Historical Geography is a branch of Human Geography that deals with the analyzes
established between man and nature throughout history and space-time. In this
perspective, they present possibilities for analyzes, characteristics, evolutions and
productions of the spaces that appear as constitutive dimensions of human practices,
allowing in this process the emergence of societies. In the present work, we will
analyze the geographic space that favored the emergence of the municipality of São
João do Cariri, which in its initial formation process flourishes in a strategic point
located on the banks of the Taperoá River. We will consider the importance of the
implantation of the first Catholic Church in the Cariris Velhos of Paraíba and that
resulted in its territorial development. The municipality under study comprised 1/3 of
the current territory of Paraíba, being one of the most important political and
administrative centers of the State. From it came many of the cities that form the
Cariris of Paraíba and other microregions. From the Crossing of Our Lady of Miracles
in St. John of Cariri were born many of the churches and parishes that form the
Diocese of Campina Grande. We will observe in this work the processes of
ascension, decrease and which element subsists as a result of its historical past
which is its traditional Festivity of its Orago.
