Résumé:
This research analyses the safety of foot foundations by comparing deterministic and
probabilistic methods. There is a big difficulty in predicting soil behaviour with deterministic
methods, but they are the most used in Brazil, because the need for more knowledge
development that covers the interaction between soil and foundations is well known. One of
the most used probabilistic methods is the Point Estimation Method (PE). In this way, this
work analyses and compares the use of probabilistic and deterministic methods in the analysis
of the safety of foot foundations in a built in the district of Manaíra in the city of João Pessoa.
The following methodology was used to develop this work: literature review about the
probability of ruin and safety factor in foot foundations, obtaining geotechnical data from the
site, and deterministic and probabilistic analysis of the selected foundation. With the work, it
was concluded that the deterministic method may not be the best way to guarantees the
security of the foundation and that the probabilistic methods give to the designer a much
greater capacity to predict the behaviour of the soil, allowing the conception of a more
efficient project with economy and security.
