Progressively, BIM models are being used to generate construction information, from quantity surveys to automated manufacturing processes and construction simulation. The latter create the basis for its use in the planning process, by adding the variable “time” to the 3D model environment, becoming possible to elaborate a 4D planning. The benefit of using design information to form the basis of the program is that the interface tasks and logistical activities, as well as constraints related to the precedence of activities, can be identified and communicated to the entire construction team through a visual image based on time. The main purpose of this study is to prove that the use of BIM 4D technology in the assembly of a steel structure has significant advantages when compared to the traditional planning routine of a company based in the city of Queimadas PB. For the development of the research, a case study was elaborated in a construction executed by the company. Eleven steps were developed to create simulations in the assembly phase of steel structures. Also, it was analyzed how the 4D planning could have avoided several mistakes that occurred during the real situation. A feedback from the company that executed the work was also obtained, aiming to seek the opinions of experts on the subject, about the method. It was evidenced in this paper that the BIM 4D does not substitute traditional planning concepts, but complements it with new analysis tools, guaranteeing more accurate and reliable informations for the planning process.
