Abstract:
The focus of modern Civil Engineering has been the development of projects that ally sustainability and quality to the constructions. Research and innovations have arisen with the purpose of studying the addition of new materials to the concrete, verifying the improvement of its performance. One of these materials is the quartzite residue from Junco do Seridó in Paraíba, thus reducing the environmental impacts caused by the disposal of this material in inappropriate places. This paper proposes evaluation of the mechanical
concrete properties with the partial replacement of the fine aggregate by quartzite residue at ten and twenty percent. Cylindrical specimens, measuring 10 x 20 cm, were molded for evaluation of simple compression strength and tensile strength by diametral compression at the ages of 7, 14, 21 and 28 days of cure. The partial replacement of the fine aggregate by quartzite residue promoted a small reduction in the compression resistance, however, the results obtained satisfy the normative parameters. For the tensile strength the results obtained were higher than those achieved for the reference concrete.
