ABSTRACT
The use of new materials in the composition of the asphalt is a practice that comes in
great evolution, always as new alternatives that can bring financial benefits,
ecological and in the own structure of the binder. The resistance to permanent
deformations, cracks caused by fatigue or thermal variations must be maximized
from new constituents of the asphalt binder, ensuring that the performance of the
asphalt, in front of the different types of traffic, is perfect, bringing comfort and safety.
This project aimed to analyze the rheological behavior of modified asphalt binders by
adding lignin from eucalyptus. This material, of great abundance in the nature,
represents 15% to 30% of the constitution of the wood in the vegetal kingdom. Thus,
rheological characterization tests were performed, such as: MSCR, LAS, PG and
continuous PG for the modified asphaltic binder by additions of 3%, 6% and 9% of
lignin extracted from eucalyptus for samples in the normal and aged phases. It was
found that the addition of lignin promoted improvements to the asphalt binder through
the results of these tests, such as: better aging response, superior thermal
resistance, and high stiffness and elasticity indexes for modified structures.
