Faced with the new demands that the globalization process imposes on the construction market, companies in the sector are driven by changes both in terms of the acquisition and implementation of technological innovations and of the incorporation of strategies aimed at solving problems, to remain competitive. However, the Civil Construction sector has not shown satisfactory performance in comparison with other sectors of the industry, especially with respect to productivity and to the waste of resources. According to Oliveira (2008), one of the main causes for problems in project planning and execution is strongly associated with poor communication among stakeholders. Thus, the present work aims to investigate the use of communication management in five civil construction companies in the city of Campina Grande (PB), in order to achieve the following specific objectives: (1) to discuss the main
problems caused by communication failures in construction project management; (2) to identify the technological tools and innovations that can be used to facilitate the communication process among project stakeholders; and, finally, (3) describe the Communication Management scenario in the city of Campina Grande (PB). In order to do so, a case study was conducted with the application of interviews, questionnaires and visits to construction sites. Data analysis demonstrates a lack of effective use and quantity of applications by corporate managers, directors and civil engineers to communicate with their employees. This results in a range of problems, including errors in installation at the construction site and, thereby, delays in the project execution schedule. It is also possible to infer that a more effective communication could reduce the damages caused by the problems that our study identified in the investigated companies.
