Resumo:
The urban growth and the development of cities, cause many problems which emerging
as the side effects of modernization. Among these problems, we can mention the disposal
of large volumes of urban solid waste and an excessive waterproofing of the soil promoted
by the paving of public roads. These two factors together entail several problems in the
cities and require the implementation of infrastructures to correct, ameliorate and avoid
the damages caused to the population and the environment. For example, we can mention
urban drainage, collection and correct disposal of solid waste and sewage, water supply,
public cleaning, among others. Their mismanagement is one of the main problems of increasing environmental impacts and flooding problems in cities, as well as the loss of
quality of life, especially in developing countries. In this area, the role of engineering
emerges, promoting solutions for each case and developing guidelines to combat
adversity. The study in question presents possible solutions for the retention of soil residues in
the Prado channel, one of those responsible for the macro drainage of the city of Campina
Grande, in the state of Paraíba, and currently receiving a high daily load of these residues,
motivated by a cultural issue and social conditions, which are understood by the population as
regards the correct disposal of garbage, preventing the correct functioning of drainage devices
and consequently generating floods, pollution of water sources and proliferation of diseases.
Taking this fact as something existing, real and recurrent in the cities and considering that
educators have already done their part, engineering again appears with possible solutions to
such problems.
