Civil construction is one of the sectors that cause greater environmental impact due to the high consumption of raw material, which consequently makes it one of the main activities that generate waste. Since it is a type of waste unwanted by industries, saw dust is usually discarded and burned, resulting in the withdrawal of oxygen from the atmosphere while it releases water vapor and carbon dioxide, which further exacerbate environmental pollution. If we estimate an average production of 2 thousand cubic meters of sawdust waste per month, all sawmills in the country would generate, at the
end of one year, about 620 thousand tons of sawdust. Therefore, it is a very abundant material with no economic value, which naturally makes the search for other more noble purposes for this type of waste something extremely interesting from an economic and environmental point of view. The main goal of this work is to analyze the possibility of using wood based industry waste as a new alternative material for the construction field. Concrete was produced with sawdust replacing the fine aggregate (sand), in the proportions of 10 and 25%, in order to evaluate the mechanical performance for simple compression and traction. The results of this work showed that the use of sawdust in the concrete dosage is not recommended for structural elements, since the results obtained were not satisfactory, considering that there was an expressive reduction in the compressive strength of these concretes dosed with sawdust, besides the significant increase in water consumption to maintain it with good workability. On the other hand, the concrete dosed with sawdust proved to be quite attractive for being used in other fields of civil construction, such as filling of slabs and blocks of fence.
