Abstract:
The present work has as object of study the architectural group formed by the Church of the Sacred Heart
of Jesus, along with Dom Malan Square, where the church is situated. The complex is located in the
center of Petrolina city, in the state of Pernambuco. The Neogothic Church is one of the oldest buildings
in the city and, along with the square where it is located, constitutes a historical and architectural
landmark of extreme local relevance. However, due to the absence of protection legislation, as well as
an adequate project orientation of intervention in historical place, the set over time was at the mercy
of several remakings, that led to decharacterization. In addition, it also shows signs of abandonment
and poor conservation, especially regarding the Square. The general aim of this work is to propose
guidelines for conservation and intervention in the built heritage. The realization of this research is
justified considering that the conservation of this historical set is important to the preservation of the
historical and collective memory of the place. Four methodologies were used to carry out this research:
the first one was a diagram with a research proposal for intervention projects, elaborated by the architect
and teacher Rosina Ribeiro (2016); the second one is based on a methodology of analysis of the
architectural object, proposed by the architect and professor Alcília Afonso (2018), elaborated based
on Serra (2006), Ribeiro (2008), and Tinoco (2009); the third was based on a technical bulletin entitled
"Pathology of Constructions: procedure for diagnosis and recovery", prepared by the civil engineer
Norberto Blumenfeld Lichtenstein (1985); and the fourth one was based on the methodology described
by Tinoco (2009), elaborated based on Lichtenstein (1985), which deepens on the means of diagnosis
and definition of conduct for interventions in heritage. As a result of this work, it was obtained the
diagnosis of the current situation of the objects of study, regarding their conservation, as well as the
guidelines for the complex's conservation and preservation.
