Abstract:
Objective: To investigate the presence of alterations in the antioxidant capacity in the saliva of patients
with periodontal disease, evaluating uric acid levels and comparing them with the group of healthy
patients. Methods: This is a quantitative, cross-sectional and experimental study, conducted with 84
individuals of both sexes, aged between 18 and 72 years. The test was performed from the collection
of saliva from patients treated at the Clinic-School of the Dentistry Course of the Federal University of
Campina Grande, in the city of Patos-PB, by the modified Navazesh method ("spitting") in order to
measure the concentration of uric acid in this saliva by the uricase/4-aminoantipyrine colorimetric
method. Results: The study had a female majority (58.83%), the mean age was 23.58 ± 1.47 years for
the control group and 32.70 ± 1.90 years for the PD group. As a result, it was found that the
concentrations of this biomolecule were slightly higher in the control group compared to the group with
periodontal disease, however, no statistically significant difference was observed. Conclusion: It is
concluded that, with the adopted methodology, there is no change in the antioxidant activity mediated
by uric acid in the saliva of patients with periodontal disease. However, it is necessary to carry out
research with a larger sample and using methodologies to evaluate other biomolecules in order to better
investigate the association between changes in antioxidant activity and periodontal disease.
