Abstract:
Anatomical basis in desmotomy patellar medial treatment of dorsal fixation of the patella in horses. The dorsal fixation of the patella is a condition that affects large animals. The displacement
may be temporary or permanent, unilateral or bilateral and occurs in both sexes. The patellar
desmotomy, ie, the section of the ligament is the most common way to solve the problem in
the case of dorsal displacement of the patella, the ligament is transected more often the medial
patellar ligament. The exact location of the patellar ligament is important in determining the
point of incision in desmotomy. The objective of this work was to study in detail the anatomy
of the patellar ligament, aiming to establish a secure point to perform the patellar desmotomy
in horses. Were palpated, dissected and measured the patellar ligaments ten knees of adult
horses died at Veterinary Hospital UFCG. The determination of insurance incision point was
determined based on the medial patellar ligament course according to its origin and insertion.
The identification by palpation of the patellar ligaments and their origins and insertions are
indispensable to the success of surgical treatment of dorsal fixation of the patella. The medial
patellar ligament had an average length of 11:46 cm, an average width of 1.36 cm and 0.52
cm average thickness; These data are important for supporting the surgeon as to the extent and
depth of the section of the ligament in the desmotomy. The best place to incision patellar
desmotomy is indicated by the literature, but should avoid the section of surrounding
anatomical structures, such as the common tendon of the gracilis and sartorius and the medial
saphenous vein.
