Leptospirosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira spp.
with worldwide distribution, in horses this disease causes high economic losses due to
recurrent uveitis and reproductive problems, and the risk of contamination for humans,
because it is a zoonosis of importance to public health. The objective was to determine
the frequency of seropositive horses to search for antibodies anti-Leptospira spp., As
well as identifying the predominant serotypes in the region. We analyzed 150 blood sera
of horses belonging to Canguaretama municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.
To verify the presence of antibodies anti-Leptospira, we used the test Microscopic
Agglutination Test (MAT) using a battery of 24 serovars as antigens, it was considered
as a positive sample that showed agglutination equal to or greater than 1: 100. The rate
found was 38% (57/150), the most common serovar in this study were Australis
(36.8%), followed by, Javanica (19%), Hardjobovis, Djasiman, Wolffi (10.6%)
Hebdomadis (5.3%), Autumnalis (3.5%), and Grippotyphosa Pomona, (1.8%). The titles
of these serovars ranged from 100 to 800.
