Resumen:
Opt for amputation member of a horse is very difficult for a veterinarian. In Brazil there are few cases of amputation and prosthesis use in horses as much Veterinarians are afraid to bet on a recovery that animal so most are euthanized. With advances in equine orthopedics partial amputation of limbs and the use of prostheses in horses can be a viable alternative for those animals who have suffered some kind of very serious orthopedic condition, his statement can extend the reproductive life of stallions and arrays of high commercial value or even animal owner sentimental value. It is important that the animal
has a quiet temperament, have a light weight and is a foal that facilitates the postoperative period. The prosthesis should offer the greatest possible comfort to the stump, which will facilitate the postoperative period and good adaptation to new living conditions. The recovery of the animal will depend greatly on the temperament and particular owner and handler attention. In this experiment we used two foals, both with fractures in the distal third of the pelvic member. The first animal was one filly, 2 years, 150 kg, right hindlimb fractured proximal portion of the billet, and possibly had no chance of survival, so the
amputation was done. The second animal was a one year and nine months colt, the quarter mile race, weighing 250 kg body weight with broken left hind limb proximal metatarsal third. After the clinical examination was then made amputation, because the animals were quiet temperament, low weight and were young. The prostheses were made from aluminum, glass fiber, polypropylene and rubber. The biggest difficulties were the postoperative period and the phase of adaptation to the prosthesis because I had to have a special care that there was no suture decency and trauma by fall. Amputation in foals is a viable option, despite the long period of adaptation of the animal to the prosthesis with that euthanasia is no longer the only option.
