Study conducted from January 2004 to December 2014, by survey data on site and medical records
filed in the Medical Clinics Department of Large Animal Veterinary Hospital (HV) of the Health
Center and Rural Technology (CSTR) at the University Federal Campina Grande (UFCG), aiming
to assess the occurrence of arthritis in horses, related to regional factors and determine diagnostic
tools and effective therapeutic. 2,513 horses were assisted, of which 72 afflicted with arthritis,
among these, 53 (73.6%) were male and 19 patients (26.4%) were female, ranging in age from
two to ten years. With the percentage of 75% occurrence in horses of Quarter Horses and their
mestizo, 20.8% of specimens undefined breed and 4.1% in the horse race thoroughbred, native
and coming from municipalities and surrounding states. It is verified higher prevalence of
osteoarthritis, making up 43.05% of the cases diagnosed in horses with an average age of seven,
prevalent in Quarter Horses. Verification 36.11% of septic arthritis, traumatic arthritis of 18.05%
and 2.77% cases of osteochondrosis. It concluded that diagnostic imaging methods, in particular
the thermographic and radiographic examination and evaluation of synovial fluid, are essential for
specific diagnostic elucidation. The diagnostic tools being satisfactory and therapies adopted for
arthritis treatments at the Veterinary Hospital / UFCG.
