Frequency of anti-Neospora caninum antibodies in dairy cattle and dogs on region Gado Bravo, Agreste of Paraíba, Brazil. Among protozoan with veterinary relevance, the Neospora caninum stands out,
causer of large economics and productive loses in herd of cattle, being dogs considered as
its final host. This research’s goal is to realize a frequency study of antibodies anti-
Neospora caninum in dairy cattle and canines on Gado Bravo region, Agreste State of
Paraíba, Brazil. There were utilized 220 cattle’s serum, mostly of dairy cows and, and 20
from dogs, both of them came form 21 rural properties. The animal’s blood, after collected
directly from the external cephalic jugular of cattle and canines, was respectively stored on
a box of polystyrene with ice for posterior centrifugation and serum obtainment. The
serum have been stored at -20oC until its process. For detecting antibodies IgG anti-N.
caninum was realized an Indirect immunofluorescence reaction (RIFI) on Lab of Parasite
Illness of Domestic Animals and Transmitted Illness Lab of Federal University of Campina
Grande, Campus Patos-PB. The serum witch reacted on dilutions ≥ 1:200 e 1:50, for
canines and cattle respectively, has been considered positive, with titles variation from
1:200 to 1:600 on cattle. The antibodies frequency anti- N. caninum found was 12,27%
(27/220) on cattle, 57,14% (12/21) on rural properties where at least one animal was
positive, and for studied canines was observed a frequency of 25% (5/20). None of studied
variables were considered as a risk factor for N. caninim on cattle. Do not inoculate dogs
has been considered a variable as risk factor (Oddsratio= 9,33) witch demonstrate
proprietor’s lack of care with those animal’s sanity. Concluded that dairy cattle and canines
on rural properties of Gado Bravo county area are exposed to infection caused by N.
caninum. Aiming minimize economic loses to cattle breeders, more studies must be done
to elucidate possible infection causes by protozoan on region cattle.
