Nuances of the translation act in film and TV series subtitles is a relevant theme for scientific investigation, and the TV series Glee features relevant aspects with respect to the translation of idioms. This research examines the translation of idioms in the subtitles of three episodes of the fifth season of Glee, from English into Brazilian Portuguese, produced by the fansub team of translators, Griots Team. Translation strategies used by the translators for the translation of idioms in the subtitles were also observed and the implications of the use of subtitles involving cultural issues and the translations of these subtitles were discussed, taking into account the Brazilian cultural context. The theoretical framework was based on Translation Studies (VENUTI, 2004; JAKOBSON, 2004; BASSNETT, 1980); Audiovisual Translation (SILVA, 2009; FRANCO AND ARAUJO, 2011; DÍAZ CINTAS, 2005); Subtitling (ARAÚJO, 2004; GOROVITZ, 2006; LINDE AND KAY, 2009; DÍAZ CINTAS AND REMAEL, 2010; DÍAZ CINTAS AND SANCHEZ, 2006); Semiotics and Semiotics of Subtitling (CARVALHO, 2005; SANTAELLA, 1986; 2005); Idioms (TAGNIN, 1989; DUARTE, 2012; BAKER, 1992; ARMSTRONG, 2005; ALVAREZ, 2011); Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics (GRIFFITHS, 2006; BAKER, 1992; ARMSTRONG, 2005); Translation Strategies (CHESTERMAN, 1997); and Culture, Identity and Cultural Representation (ALVAREZ, 2011; LARAIA, 1986; BAUMAN, 2012; HATJE-FAGGION, 2009; VENUTI, 1999; BIEGING, 2010). This research is inserted in the field of Translation Studies, and it is from concept nature (WILLIAMS; CHESTERMAN, 2002) and it is from the descriptive pure research product oriented field (HOLMES apud VENUTI, 2004), since the final product of the subtitles was analized and not its process. The research approach is quanti-qualitative, because it involves numerical data and the interpretation of the data (TEIXEIRA, 2007). The data collection followed the steps: i) selection and quantification of the subtitles produced by the group Griots Team in the selected episodes; ii) analysis of the subtitles in order to investigate the translations of
idioms; and iii) discussion about aspects related to cultural issues in the translation of these idioms and its implications. 59 idioms were collected and they were divided into four categories for data analysis: 1) literal translation of idioms, losing the sense of it; 2) translation of one idiom to another idiom having the same effect; 3) translation of idiom by paraphrase; and 4) omission. We verified that the translators have managed, in general, to translate the idioms. The largest number of translation was done by paraphrasing and the translation by another idiom, there was only one case of omission and four cases of literal translation. We noticed that the look and attitude of each character will influence on the amount of idioms used. We conclude that the subtitling teaching is relevant to Modern Languages and Translation courses.
