In the present study aimed to evaluate, through the ultrasonographic
monitoring, the characteristics of ovarian dynamics in mares in order to
determine the amount of follicular waves, and the number of follicles in each
wave, and identify changes in vaginal cytologic pattern at each stage of the
estrous cycle. There were four mares of Quarter Horses, adult and cyclical in
the city of Patos-PB. three transrectal ultrasonographic examination was carried
out in three days, in the period June-July 2016, a total of 10 for each mare. To
evaluate the growth and measure the ovarian follicles, and identify the presence
of corpora lutea in the ovaries. Follicles were counted and measured the
diameters of the largest and the second largest follicle found during each
sonographic evaluation. Three of the four evaluated mares had two follicular
waves in 30-day evaluation. The diameter of ovulatory follicles found in this
study were 45.5; 46.9 and 50.3 mm in mares 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Already
the second largest follicle diameter (subordinate follicles) were 16.0; 19.0 and
29.5 mm in mares 2, 3 and 4, respectively, on the day of ovulation. It was
observed that there was alternating between the left and right ovary in relation
to the ovulatory follicle and dominant follicle. In all mares was possible to
visualize the corpus luteum, despite the mare 5 does not ovulated. vaginal
cytology examination was performed, however vaginal cytologic pattern showed
no difference between estrogen and progesteronic stages in the cycle in mares
evaluated in this study. Studies are needed with a larger number of animals in
order to deepen the knowledge of other events involving ovarian follicular
dynamics mare in the semiarid region of the Northeast.
