Antibiotics are natural or synthetic substances that are used therapeutically in the treatment of
infections caused by bacteria. These drugs have reduced worldwide the rates of diseases and
deaths caused by them however, the indiscriminate use is directly related to the emergence of
resistant bacteria. Therefore, the objective of this work was to analyze the importance of the
rational use of antibiotics, and to describe the very important role of the pharmacist in the
control of bacterial resistance. Therefore, an integrative review was carried out in order to group
and synthesize information available through the electronic databases: Periodicals Capes,
Electronic Libary Online (SciElo), LILACS, Science Direct and Pubmed, analyzing
publications from the last 10 years (2012-2022) giving priority to the work carried out in the
last 6 years (2017-2022). Of the 69 articles found, 65 were selected for the elaboration of the
work. These showed that the increase in bacterial resistance is related to the indiscriminate use
of antibiotics, self-medication, errors in prescriptions and even the irrational use of antibiotics
in agriculture; The COVID-19 pandemic, in which studies show that the consumption of
antibiotics has doubled compared to 2019, can also impact this resistance process, bringing
irreparable damage in the near future. Therefore, bacterial resistance is currently a worldwide
problem, being evidenced by the appearance of bacteria that no longer respond to drugs that
were previously used for their treatment, this due to the indiscriminate use of antibiotics over
the years, with the pharmacist being one of the professionals of responsible for actions ranging
from drug use guidelines to awareness measures.
