Swinepox outbreaks in the State of Ceará. This paper aims to describe cases of swinepox in pigs in the State of Ceará, characterizing its epidemiological, clinical and pathological aspects, so that they can contribute to the know ledge of the disease in the region, assist in the development of swine breeding and institute measures of control and prevention of disease, reducing economic losses. Nodular lesions were collected from three pigs affected by the swinepox virus, obtained through an elliptical incision in the ventral and inguinal abdominal region, fixed in 10% buffered formalin, and referred to the Animal Pathology Laboratory of the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Campina Grande, Patos, Paraíba. The clinical signs observed were macular, rounded and reddish eruptions on areas of the skin devoid of hairs, and during the evolution of the disease, these lesions give rise to papules, vesicles, pustules and scabs. After removal of the crusts, there remains an ulceration that tends to regenerate and form scar tissue. In the macroscopy, lesions were observed in the ventral and lateral abdominal, thoracic lateral and medial aspects of the thoracic and pelvic limbs. Microscopically, the lesions were characterized by cytoplasmic hypertrophy and vacuolization of the epidermis, usually affecting the cells of the spinous stratum. We also observed proliferative and ulcerative dermatitis with balloon degeneration of the epithelial cells, with eosinophilic viral inclusions in the keratinocytes. It can be concluded that porpoise occurs in swine in the municipality of Lavras da Mangabeira, in the state of Ceará. It is probable that the occurrence of this disease is mainly related to deficiencies in sanitary management, which attracts mechanical vectors that spread the disease in the creations.
