Early sterilization in canines and cats - literature review. Every year, thousands of animals are euthanized in zoonosis centers, due to problems in population control of abandoned animals. Early gonadectomy is an upcoming birth control tool proven very efficient in several countries, incapacitating reproduction among adopted animals and thus lowering relinquishment rates. The necessity to know more about this castration model has led the development of studies on making it safe to operate. In this review of literature, an assembly of data and studies has been made about this procedure, including utilized surgical and anesthetic techniques, in addition to risks and benefits this procedure may entail. This study showed that early gonadectomy is a safe form of sterilization and it is more beneficial than other procedures in most cases. However, each animal must be individually analysed for the process to be done responsibly, considering factors such as breed and animal size, providing better life quality to the animal who underwent surgery.
