In school yards, vegetation plays a role that goes beyond environmental quality, serving as a source of learning. The afforestation of schools can be an important instrument of Environmental Education, encouraging students and teachers, for the knowledge and appreciation of nature and in the exercise of citizenship and socio-environmental responsibility, in addition to contributing to landscaping and quality of life in the school environment. Since trees play an important role in reducing heat in environments, providing comfort and reducing energy consumption used to cool spaces. This work presents a proposal for afforestation for schools in the city of Santa Cruz - PB, in order to encourage and develop environmental education in childhood, also paying attention to the importance and benefits of afforestation in the quality of life of the school community. The methodology consisted of a field study where observation and characterization of the institutions under study were carried out. The surroundings of four schools were observed in April to identify the presence or absence of trees and the location of vegetation in relation to areas that receive greater influence from the sun's rays and construction materials of the building. average temperature of the municipality, a survey and analysis of the knowledge and practices of environmental education in schools was carried out. As a result, there is a proposal for afforestation for schools that have little afforestation, and presentation of strategies for the development of environmental education, such as the preparation of a booklet with lessons that employ the culture of sustainability and gamified activities to subsidize teachers encouraging the expansion of environmental education in schools.
