Abstract

The water scarcity that affects the semiarid region of the Brazilian Northeast and the issue of the lack of adequate public open spaces in the cities are problems that can be articulated to minimize the negative effects that both might cause to the people’s quality of life. Despite facing water shortage, the city of Campina Grande, Paraíba, presents considerable rainfall rates throughout the year, whose volume could be used for local use associated to the improvement of living conditions in the public open spaces of the city. Thus, the present study aims to recommend guidelines for project proposals about rainwater harvesting systems in public open spaces of the city of Campina Grande, PB. The main intention is initiating debates about the subject and encouraging this practice, showing that it is possible to keep the rainwater local at the same time that public open spaces can have their use qualified or enhanced because of it. Through researches about the most viable rainwater infiltration, storage and collection methods and about the public open spaces of the city more favorable for the placing of the methods, will be presented guidelines for project proposals that unite the factor of the improvement of the rainwater management with the planning of open spaces for public use in the city.
