Resumo:
The dissertation proposes an architectural intervention in the Elias Jacob Romcy building,
located in the city center of Fortaleza, state of Ceará (Brazil), which is currently underutilized,
partially abandoned and mischaracterized. The historic building, in modern style, was
constructed in the late 60's, housing a famous department store in the capital of Ceará from
the 70's to 90's, owned by the Romcy Group. This proposal seeks to give a new use to the
building to meet the current demands of the city center, bringing life again to the region and
its surroundings, as well as redeeming and safeguarding the modern commercial heritage
existing in the area. In order to support the project intervention, theoretical concepts on modern
built heritage and its conservation, preservation, and restoration were studied. Also,
interventions in modern works and the pre-project conditioning factors of the building were
analyzed, resulting in an architectural project that maintains the modernist characteristics of the
building and brings new dynamics to it. The architectural proposal makes the edifice an
inviting, comfortable and functional space for its users while providing for the new generations
the opportunity of having the Romcy Building as a preserved historical building in full use.
