Every day, the production of solid waste increases, as the population grows and, consequently, consumption. Even in small cities, such as Marizópolis – PB, the final disposalof solid wastes has become worrying, since there is not a large area for adequate final disposal, such as sanitary landfills. This monographic work aims to identify the environmental impacts caused by solid waste generated in urban areas, residential waste, commercial waste, health services and civil construction. The methodology used for this research was the bibliographical survey, descriptive research, field research in the study area, where it was found that garbage is collected and discarded in the open, with no soil preparation, and in an area close to the residences, at the entrance of the city. The open garbage dumps attracts largenumbers of insects and rodents, as well as producing very strong and foul odor, which has contributed to the proliferation of numerous diseases. In the rainy season, contaminated water, debris and other toxic materials flow into the São Gonçalo water source, resulting in a large number of children and elderly people with dysentery and vomiting, despite the water being treated. From this research, it was verified the urgent need for public authorities to search for a suitable place for waste disposal, and to carry out public awareness campaigns to collaboratewith the municipal collection system, demonstrating the benefits of selective collection, through the collaboration of residents, and encourage the recycling and reuse of some waste.
