Resumo:
Paleontology refers to the study of fossils, which are traces of living beings that have
remained preserved, mostly in sedimentary rocks. The teaching of Paleontology in
schools, in basic education is proposed by the National Curricular Parameters (NCP),
however the contents referring to this type of study continue to be little worked in the
classroom, providing a gap between the understanding of biological evolution and the
society. That said, it is necessary to seek to bring scientific knowledge to students, to
generate an approximation between them. In view of this, the objective was to identify
and challenge the main challenges and methodological practices in the teaching of
paleontology in basic education. The methodological procedure applied in this study
was the qualitative bibliographic research. Paleontology becomes of utmost relevance,
since from it it is possible to describe and report the history of life on planet Earth,
based on the numerous records of geological and geographical events that took place
in previous times, as well as on the transformations of organisms. In the passage of
time. Thus, the results obtained in this study proved that the use of various
methodological resources to work on topics on Paleontology makes the class more
dynamic and pleasant, generating students' interest in the topic, and providing the
conception and development of student knowledge. In this way, the application of
alternative methods in the teaching-learning process of complex subjects such as
Paleontology proved to be fundamental to enable the contact between the student and
Science, in a pleasant and practical way.
