Abstract:
Depression is a mental disorder that involves several etiological factors, affecting the mental
and physical health of the individual, in addition to interfering with daily life, mainly because
it involves psychological suffering, which can also bring aggravations such as the emergence
of chronic and viral diseases, if making it a worrisome health condition. The search for new
methods grows as traditional methods are not effective in some cases, therapeutic alternatives
such as psilocybin-assisted psychedelic psychotherapy (PAP) have shown promise in the
management of depression. The present study aimed to carry out an integrative literature review
on psilocybin and its therapeutic potential in the treatment of depression. Twelve articles
including preclinical, clinical and randomized studies were selected for this work. Trials
performed with psilocybin demonstrate efficacy in individuals with depressive and anxiety
disorders, the substance caused some transient side effects during sessions, however it has a
high safety profile and low dependency rate.
