Resumo:
The sugarcane agribusiness experienced rapid growth in recent years, but accompanied by a
context of exploitation of rural workers, which brings out the acting of the "Ministério
Público do Trabalho*' (MPT), an institution that, especially after the return of democracy in
Brazil, has being perceived as essential to the full exercise of citizenship, legal advocate for
labor and promoter of social justice. Questioning the notion of "judicialization of politics" and
addressing issues such as institutional evolution of MPT and the emergence of a new category
of rights (called "metaindividual"), the purpose of this dissertation is to study the position of
the "'Ministério Público do Trabalho" in the context of struggles this economic sector,
emphasizing the role of the institution within the sugarcane agribusiness sector of the state of
São Paulo. Checking the schedule of activities of the "Ministério Público do Trabalho" forms
a dynamic tune with the interests and expectations present in the wider social environment,
the work seeks to understand how the other social actors have understood such an institution,
as a mere substitute for unions in conflict interests or public search new arena of labor rights.
Furthermore, we analyze the views of members of the institution about labor relations in
sugarcane agribusiness, identifying how such conceptions are present in their practices.
Finally, we analyze the flow of institutional measures, since the initiation of investigative
procedures to its filing, to understand how the actions of the prosecutor may contribute to the protection of the rights guaranteed to workers in the sugarcane agribusiness. This is a research that seeks to combine qualitative and quantitative techniques, the range from the analysis of various processes and internal documents to the institution by conducting interviews with various social actors involved in this context.
