Resumen:
Epidemiological characterization of leptospirosis in hairless sheep from the semi-arid region of Paraíba. Leptospirosis is a highly prevalent disease in Brazil leading to high economic losses for domestic livestock. Its main impact is the impairment of reproductive performance of herds affected. This work had as objective to determine the prevalence of positive properties (foci) to ovine leptospirosis in semiarid of Paraíba, beyond determine the prevalence of seropositive sheep. Were researched anti-Leptospira agglutinins in sheep from the mesoregion of semiarid of Paraíba State, Brazil. From July 2009 to July 2010 were examined 1275 sera of sheep from 117 flocks located in 19 cities by the microscopic agglutination test, using 24 Leptospira spp. serovars as antigens. From 1275 samples tested, 69 (5.41%) were positive with titers ranging from 100 to 3200 and 117 properties, 33 (28.20%) had reactive animals. The characterization of serovars most likely took into consideration the titration and frequency. The most likely distribution of serovars was: autumnalis (49.27%), andamas (27.53%), sentot (17.39%), australis (1.44%) and whitcomb (4.34%).
