Resumen:
Outbreaks of photossensitization associated with the ingestion of Froelichia
humboldtiana are frequent in equidae and in bovines in the municipalities of
Parelhas, Jardim do Seridó and Santana do Seridó, in the Western Seridó region
of Rio Grande do Norte. To reproduce experimentally the poisoning, two
experimental mares ware tied by a rope, in different places in a pasture of
exclusively F. humboldtiana for a 16 days period. Each animal was supplemented
with 2.5 kg of concentrate ration each 2 days. A control animal stayed in
another area without F. humboldtiana. After 4 days both mares in the paddock
with F. humboldtiana showed reddening and alopecia of the white regions of the
body. After 16 days lesions were more severe with exudates and crusts. No
lesions were observed in the control animal. Serum levels of AST, GGT, LDH and
FA were within normal values. F. humboldtiana was very palatable for the
horses. These results demonstrate that F. humboldtiana causes primary
photosensitization in horses.
