Abstract:
Tetanus is a Toxemic disease, highly fatal disease caused by a potent neurotoxin
that is produced by a specific causative agent, Clostridium tetani, in tissues under
anaerobic conditions, devitalized and contaminated with dirt or excrement. Disease of
worldwide distribution, being more common in warmer parts of continents. The horses
are the most likely to have this disease of all species, with the possible exception of
humans, in this species the mortality rate varies widely from one area to another. Also,
known as telluric disease, in other words, native land, 7 days ill and characterized by
signs of soreness, tetany, convulsions, prolapse of third eyelid reflex hyperexcitability
and respiratory arrest. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and epidemiological
aspects of tetanus in animals treated at the HV / CSTR / UFCG, Patos. We used medical
records for the period January 2005 to November 2010, with the occurrence of 18 cases
of tetanus in horses.
