Resumen:
The reproductive cycle of bitches leads to hormonal and behavioral changes in the
reproductive tract. In the transition from proestrus to estrus occurs openness and
relaxation of the cervix, facilitating the migration of microorganisms from the vagina to
the uterus, leading to diseases as pyometra. The aim of this study was to identify the
microorganisms colonizing the reproductive tract of healthy bitches and relate their
presence to the stage of the reproductive cycle. Thirteen healthy bitches were used in the
different phases of the estrous cycle and submitted to OSH (ovariohysterectomy) in the
Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Campina Grande – Patos. To perform
the microbiological culture and uterine vaginal, swabs were made in the region of the
cranial vagina, cervix and uterus. From these swabs was performed the isolation of
microorganisms. The determination of cycle phase was performed by vaginal cytology.
The reproductive phase with highest percentage of isolation was the diestrus and the
microorganisms isolated from the reproductive tract of bitches were: bacilos Gramnegative,
bacilos Gram-positive, cocos Gram-positive e Staphylococcus spp.
