Resumo:
The objective was to conduct a survey of the series of hernias in ruminants, horses and
pigs in the field of Large Animal Clinic at the Veterinary Hospital of Federal University
of Campina, Campus Patos - PB, specifying the type of hernia, the species affected,
race, sex and clinical resolution of each case in the period January 2000 to December
2010. During the study period 4600 animals were treated with 98 (2.13%) registered
cases of hernia in the Large Animal Clinic with a higher incidence, 64 (65.30%) cases
of umbilical hernia. Of the total cases were reported by 22 horses, 46 cattle, 14 sheep,
05 goats and 11 pigs. The resolution of 92 clinical cases was surgery, 05 underwent
medical treatment and a case was submitted to the slaughter, at the option of the owner.
It was observed that the hernias are diseases of great importance in our region,
especially the umbilical hernias in young animals of the bovine, equine, and swine.
