Public management in disaster prevention: the case of Sertânia, Pernambuco, in the rains of 2020. Natural disasters occur all over the world and cause great damage to the affected population. This is a topic that has grown a lot, considering the current scenario of climate change and the social context in which we live of significant urban growth and increase in existing social vulnerabilities. Extreme hydrological events are natural disasters that are intensified by human action or management problems. Very unusual, in 2020 the municipality of Sertânia-PE suffered from heavy rains that had many impacts on the place. This case study, characterized as a descriptive and exploratory research, aimed to analyze these impacts, if they were intensified by human action and to verify how the municipal management acted in the face of what happened. As a research problem, we have: How did the municipality of Sertânia act to mitigate the effects of the 2020 flood? This study showed that the municipal management did nothing to prevent negative impacts in the event of heavy rains or any other extreme weather event, but acted satisfactorily during the event, providing the necessary support to the population. The results also showed that the municipality has implemented some actions in the quest to mitigate new disasters, although there is still much to be done in accordance with all national legislation and international documents formulated on the subject. In addition, this work brought with it a real example of the importance of municipal governments effectively implementing disaster management, regardless of risk uncertainties.
