Resumo:
The number of autopsies performed in wild and domestic birds in the Animal Pathology
Laboratory (LPA) of the Veterinary Hospital (HV) of the Federal University of Campina
Grande (UFCG) has increased in recent years. Many diseases have been diagnosed, but
there is no detailed study of the most frequent pathologies that occur in birds in Paraíba.
Thus, the aim of this work was to study several diseases diagnosed in LPA / HV / UFCG
during the period from 2003 to 2012, featuring the epidemiological, clinical and
pathological aspects. For this retrospective study of the files of records of autopsies LPA,
reviewed the clinical and epidemiological data was performed, in addition to the gross and
microscopic findings of each disease. Autopsies that occurred during the year 2012 were
followed and studied. The number of autopsies in poultry was higher than those of wild
birds. Infectious diseases were more frequent presenting 34 %, followed by 9.5% with
metabolic diseases, traumatic diseases with 10.5 % and 2.1% with toxic diseases. Among
the bacterial diseases were the most number and this result is mainly attributed to poor
hygiene and failures of management in small backyard creations. It was also observed that
the very small number of cases of viral diseases demonstrates that vaccinations for these
diseases are being properly used which protects animals from disease outbreaks such as
avian infectious bronchitis and yaws.
