Study of cases of perineal laceration and rectovaginal fistula in mares treated at Hospital Veterinário Universitário Prof. Dr. Ivon Macedo Tabosa - UFCG. Perineal lacerations and rectovaginal fistulas in mares are lesions mostly caused at the time of parturition. There are three degrees of perineal laceration classified according to its gravity and place. These lesions cause great vaginal contamination causing troubles for its healing and consequences that promote economic losses. Thus, the purpose of this work was to do a retrospective case study in mares with such lesions attended at the University Veterinary Hospital Dr. Ivon Macedo Tabosa of the Federal University of Campina Grande – Campus Patos from 2008 to 2018. It was sought through the records of the animals to do a clinical surgery study about the theme and monitoring one of these cases in 2018. In that period four mares were attended with perineum rupture being one with first degree of laceration and the rest with third degree associated with a rectovaginal fistula. The gravest lesion was related to primiparous for being found in the youngest animals. The laceration degree was directly related with difficult correction of the lesion. The creation regime showed certainly that mares weren’t accompanied by a Veterinary Doctor during parturition showing a predisposing factor to the lesion. The period of hospitalization ranged from eight days to nine months being made from one to eleven surgical procedures in these animals. All mares went through follow-up and daily treatment with aspect variation in the state of surgical wound. In those with gravest wound suture dehiscence was often found due to
contamination, occurrence of necrotic area and secretion in the wounds. All cases were resolved, however, from collection of information after hospitalization concluded that one of them due to complications such as pneumovagina and endometritis became infertile demonstrating the severity of these lesions.
