Toxoplasmosis is a worldwide anthropozoonosis that affects millions of people on the
world. Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular protozoan, that parasitize various tissues of
mammals and birds. The importance of ovine and caprine toxoplasmosis is related to
reproductive losses and the implications for public health. This study aimed to verify the
occurrence of anti-T. gondii in sheep and goats slaughtered in the public slaughterhouse of
Patos city, located in the western part of the state of Paraíba. 100 sera from sheep and 97
from goats were analyzed using Indirect Hemagglutination (HI) test and Indirect
Immunofluorescence Reaction with a cut off of 64. The results obtained by HI showed a
frequency of 4% and 4.12% of reactive serum from sheep and goats, respectively, while by
RIFI the frequency was 25% and 27.8%. Fisher’s exact test found no significant difference
in seropositivity by sex and species variables. In regard to the comparison among both
techniques, Kappa Index showed slight agreement between serological methods, (0.1481
and 0.0616 for sheep and goats, respectively). Given the frequency found, it becomes
evident the need for further studies on risk factors in the herd goats and sheep destined for
slaughterhouse Public Patos-PB so you can take effective measures for control and
prevention.
