Prevalence of myofascial pain and joint noises in high school adolescents. Myofascial pain and joint sounds are the most common symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), the patients with this disorder have a higher level of stress and anxiety. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of myofascial pain and joint sounds in students of 1st and 3rd year of high school in private in the city of Patos-PB network. We obtained a sample of 175 students and as a tool for data collection was used the already employed Research Diagnostic Criteria For Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC / TMD axis II). For data analysis we used the statistical test Chi Square using SPSS software version 17. Of the 175 students 85 were 1 and 90 of the 3rd year. 51.4% of the sample were women and 48.6% for men. The prevalence of pain was 23.4% for the entire sample, and the students of 1st year were slightly more affected by pain (51.2%), while for the joint noise obtained a prevalence of 32%, and 62.5% represented by students of the 3rd year. Regarding gender women in general were more affected by both the pain (68.3%) as the noise (69.6%). The significant prevalence of myofascial pain and joint sounds found in these adolescents indicates the magnitude of the problem, which should be seen as a priority of attention to public health. There is a lack of studies on TMD in adolescent population, the new studies in Brazil to better qualify and quantify the pain and joint sounds as symptoms of TMD are needed.
