Résumé:
Bryophytes play an important role in the process of ecological succession, colonization
primary care and soil erosion control, thus contributing to the prevention of the
desertification. There are three subclasses of avascular land plants: Bryidae,
Marchantiidae and Anthocerotiidae, the first two being the most representative in the
State of Paraiba. Despite the lower physiological and structural complexity, some species
can be relatively successful in xeric environments due to the possession of mechanisms that
allow them to survive for relatively long periods of desiccation and resume their
development after new contact with water. The objective of this work was to contribute to the
knowledge of the Caatinga bryoflora in the State of Paraíba, through the floristic-taxonomic survey
of species of mosses and thallous liverworts occurring in the municipality of Cuité,
located in the Agreste region of Paraíba and in the Curimataú Ocidental micro-region, with
semi-arid climate and temperature varying between 17 and 28ºC. For this, collections were carried out between
August 2015 and February 2016, Material was identified based on literature
specialist and received the usual treatment recommended for bryophytes and was later
incorporated into the herbarium collection of the UFCG Education and Health Center. Were
ten species distributed in five families and five genera were identified as follows:
Bartramiaceae Shwägr. (Philonotis uncinata var. gracilima Angstr), Bryaceae Shwägr. (Bryum
argenteum Hedw and Bryum coronatum Schwägr), Fissidentaceae Schimp. (Fissidens angustelimbatus
Mitt., Fissidens angustifolius Sull., Fissidens flaccidus Mitt., Fissidens lindbergii A.
Jaeger., Fissidens zollingeri Mont.), Pottiaceae Schimp. (Hyophila involuta Hook.) and Ricciaceae
(Riccia stenophylla Spruce.). The results obtained demonstrated the existence of a relative
bryophyte species richness in an area of low humidity. The species Philonotis uncinata
var. gracilima Angstr and Fissidens anguste-limbatus Mitt. are mentioned for the first time
for the state of Paraíba.
