Abstract:
Oral changes related to smoking: a literature review. The Tobacco, Nicotina tabacum, is an America original plant which among other characteristics has the capacity to develop chemical dependency. Throughout the years, this plant known by the indigenous people as “Holy Herb” began to become popular in Europe and in the rest of the world, and had its apogee on the great wars period. The studies performed after the Second World War ensures the relation between tobacco and lungs and cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Even knowing the tobacco consequences in its several forms through the advertisements linked to product and also in the midia, there is more than 20,1 millions of smokers in Brazil with over eighteen years old, which 200 thousand dies nowadays for cause of its use. Among the 4000 substances that composes the cigarettes it’s possible to detach beyond nicotine by its psychoactive action, there is the presence of carcinogenic agents, radioactives products, heavy metals, and others. There are several buccal alterations related by the use of tobacco for example stomatitis nicotine, melanosis, dental changes and periodontics, pre carcinogenics lesions and oral carcinoma. It´s crucial for the dental surgeon being able to identify its origin, its presentation, physiopathological aspects and dependence besides countless oral modifications that manifest arising its utilization, so that the dental surgeon being capable to treat it and help pacient to stop the habit of smoking.
