The image of the dental surgeon by different social groups in the city of Patos / PB. The aim of this study was to assess the current image of the dentist before social groups of different ages and sex. Methods: We interviewed 120 people divided equally among three groups: the elderly over 60 years, adults between 40 and 59 years and young people between 15 and 19 years the city of Patos-PB, used a script to interview questions that aimed to verify the professional image and its importance, and the perception of respondents about the dentist, from the first idea and the vision of the ideal dentist. Results: Using the evaluation of the content of the thematic strategy Bardin (1993) who divided the opinions of respondents in categories was observed that 60% of people associate the word "dentist" to the category of professional qualities such as technical competence, good relationship with the patient and punctuality, and positive image of professional as: be calm, empathetic, dedicated, attentive; whereas for 37.5% of adults the dentist is still associated with sensations and feelings as pain, discomfort and passivity. Already 54% of respondents consider the "ideal dentist" a professional associated with the category of personal characteristics such as: calm, patience, good relationship and 34% who have good professional features such as technical competence, skill and professional development. Conclusion: It can be inferred that an attitude of greater concern for the humane care and treatment by the dentist will help to better conceptualization of their profession from society.
