Treatments in pediatric usually depend on the child's behavior. For infant patients in which the management techniques employed are unable to contain the behavior to perform the dental procedure, some means of pharmacologial control are indicated, incluing conscious sedation with nitrouns oxide and midazolam, which is a widely researched benzodiazepine used for conscious sedation. Thus, the aim of the present study was to conduct a review of conscious sedation prior to dental treatment in children, focusing on advantagens, disadvantagens, indications, contraindications, pharmacodynamic and efficacy information regarding the use of these drugs, materials necessary to perform the tecniques and method of aplication. It was noticed that there several drugs that can be used in conscious sedation an that througt a strutured anamnesis, analyzing the indications and contraindications of each patient, it is possible to trace the treatment plan individually and capable of adjusting toeach patient'sneeds. Conscious sedation requires some care and it is up to the dentist to identify and customize the care and sedation tecnique according to each patient1s needs.
