Resumen:
Introduction: The smile is the concept a key role in the transmission of
emotion, and its aesthetic is considered an important part in facial harmony.
When you have an imbalance in the exposure of gum length, you are
diagnosed with gingival smile. There are several therapeutic alternatives for the
correction of the gingival smile, but they are invasive interventions that cause a
lot of discomfort in the postoperative period. A current and less invasive
alternative is the use of Botulinum Toxin Type A (BTX-A). Materials and
Methods: The electronic databases Medline / Pubmed, Scopus and Web of
Science were searched after inclusion criteria were applied, individuals older
than 15 years with gingival smile and treated with injections of BTX-A alone or
in combination with other procedures. Results: 5 studies were finally selected
for the study, 4 trials of non-randomized trials and 1 clinical trial. The decrease
of the gingival smile when treated with BTX-A associated with lip repositioning
surgery was 5 mm compared to the BTX-A application alone there was a
variation from 3.04 to 5.11 with an average of 3, 93 mm. Discussion The use of
BTX-A in the correction of the gingival smile is effective mainly in the first two
weeks after the application, either for the use alone or with association to the
surgery of repositioning of the upper lip. Further randomized controlled trials are
needed to assess the use of BTX-A associated with other procedures.
